The IRCCS Stella Maris Foundation (SMF) is a suburban (located near to Pisa) public academic hospital, created in 1958, providing care to children with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. SMF is organized in different Units and one of them is dedicated to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD); this Unit receives every year about 400 patients (half are new patients) for diagnosis and treatment from all over Italy. The diagnosis is formulated through a comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation; many of these patients are enrolled in different research project. SMF has developed a Tuscany population-based ASD screening programme which is now utilized by other regions in Italy. The IRCCS SMF employs a total staff of about 350 persons, and host post-graduated and post-doc students. The IRCCS is responsible of research projects funded by MoH, EC and private industry.
